My thanks, oh most valorous of maids
That you glittered so close with no graze
And returned me to my native shore:
At the platform of kilometre forty-one
Where I flew, feeling the wind head-on
On Uncle Benya’s petrol-tank once more.
Uncle Benya, twice-removed, was grey-eyed
Leaving family does, he used to ride
With the children hither and thither.
His son Borya, who was bigger than me
He seated behind him on the croup of the steed
The petrol-tank was in front–at the withers.
I was the happiest of all cousins with no doubt
As under me fragrant petrol sloshed about
Under my fingers handlebars jerked in snatches
(By the sides there were two sturdy male hands)
And towards us there sailed, like islands
In a sea of copper pines, the shabby dachas.
That marine din, those coniferous distractions
That best of all the world’s attractions
My uncle in a leather helmet, the smell of bliss–
You snatched these from eternity to our realm
Oh my sister of the shining helm
When you sped on by and contrived to miss.
