‘I was a soldier in a dreadful war…’ (Svetlana Kekova)

I was a soldier in a dreadful war
where we contended for death and not for life.
Where is the lord of the seas’ waves and of the stars?
Who lays down regulations and shudders the earth?

I joined the ranks and at the count of ‘one’
I carried out a quick march in the desert country.
Who will take the darkness away from closed eyes?
Who will bury gold in the sands of the sea?

I was water for those who wanted to drink.
I was grass for those who wanted to sleep.
Who was it that threaded the needle with me?
Who was it that made me become the earth so deep?

A snake is crawling over the desert ground
and a diamond is burning in the desert skies.
You answer me, oh Angel and Judge
Who will take the darkness away from closed eyes?
