Romance without cruelty (Evgeny Lesin)

He was a zealous patriot
But liberal views had she
She went for lectures to the Goths
And desired that evil should be.

He was both stubborn and frenzied
And it was fire that burned in his heart
While in the circle of Satanists
She kicked a fine leg, for her part.

Two most recognisable portraits
That spare neither anger nor force
She herself did not love the poet
But he had to love her, of course.

She would speak slander upon slander
He avoided slander and all
So that was the way she would vex him
And he’d worship her for it all.

He was a most refined poet
She critiqued verse as of right
And with some words like knuckledusters
Gave him more than one sleepless night.

And here in the universal bustle
He made up his mind and anyways
For some reason asked her to meet him
During one of those tragic days.

And she, with an infernal glance
Said to him, without further ado
Well them, come to the Triumphal Arch
And I’ll be together with you.

A slag then, and also a bitch
She left him to wait on his own
And the government punished him severely
For the demo he mounted alone.
